Old Town Alexandria Living Room
This typical town-home layout originally served as a living room and dining room space, but when I learned about the hundreds of books this client had in storage it became apparent that the space was best served as a library. To unite the spaces, we opted for a single custom-sized sisal rug. We recovered the existing sofa and two of the armchairs and added a swivel-rocker with ottoman to a cozy corner of the new library, which we earmarked especially for reading with the addition of an adjustable floor lamp. Lighting was optimized by using recessed cans to balance the illumination provided by the petal-like fixture in the main seating area. We retained the green-grey walls — color-matched to the shelving and taffeta drapery panels — to expand the space visually. The line of bookcases is broken by a custom designed cabinet in a walnut finish that provides much needed closed-storage. The caramel-colored stripe on the sofa and the cinnamon hue on the chairs contrast nicely with the cooler enveloping wall color.
